“I bloody love Shooglebox”

– Toni Summers Hargis, Author

Toni Summers Hargis started using Shooglebox six months ago when she was researching her new non-fiction book How to Stand Up to Sexism.

She says it's transformed the way she works and now she recommends it to anyone doing lots of research – she tweeted recently: “I bloody love Shooglebox!”

Toni told us she uses Shooglebox to save and quickly find and review all the studies, articles, statistics, quotes and other material that feed into her writing.

But she says it's not just about having a place to gather research specific to the topic she's focusing on.

"Although I'm supposed to be researching one topic – pay gap, for example – I inevitably come across lots of other really useful stuff which I don't want to work on at the time but also don't want to lose. Shooglebox is great for that.

"Previously you'd sometimes read an article and think, "Oh, that's not quite what I need". And then, you know, a month later you think actually it is now – but where the heck was it?"

Toni has separate boxes for the specific topics she's writing about, as well as more random ones for quotes, for interesting conversations on social media, and for those things she has a hunch might be useful in future.

As her new book was taking shape after her initial research, it was sometimes the non-specific boxes that yielded the biggest surprises. One of them was a box she had been using to save social media comments and conversations as she spotted them. "It's a good example of a box that suddenly stepped up and came right to the front, almost like: "Ta-da, now you need me!"

Toni's new book is a practical guide to handling sexism wherever it's encountered – with perfect responses and comebacks to everything from microaggressions to outright insults and harassment.

Social media has increasingly become a source of inspiration and examples for Toni – and Shooglebox meant she could squirrel conversations away and quickly get back to the original source when she needed it.

Other writers tell us similar things. The more varied the things you squirrel away in Shooglebox, the more it has the capacity to surprise, inspire and help you.
